The highly respected watch making firm, Henry Capt, was originally established by Henry Daniel Capt (1773- 1843). In 1844, Henry’s son, also called Henry, took over the business which was then based at Fusterie 85. In 1851 the business’s premises were moved to 174 rue du Rhône and, in the late 1870s, the firm was bought by Gallopin. The company won numerous horological prizes, including: 4 bronze medals in 1878 at the Geneva Chronometer Contest followed by their first silver prize, ‘Special Prize’ and ‘Honourable Mention’ at the Geneva Observatory. In 1882 they received First Prize for a watch with a palladium balance-spring, the first company recorded to have received a prize for this type of spring. Following these successes, Henry Capt became the first Swiss watchmaker to enter a watch for testing at England’s prestigious Kew Observatory.
